Choose magnesium over melatonin for long-term sleep support

More than a third of adults in the U.S. aren’t reaching the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep a night. So it’s no surprise that the demand for sleep aids is on the rise. Unfortunately, many people are turning to a synthetic form of the hormone melatonin (and high doses of it) for nightly use. While it’s considered a supplement in the U.S, many other countries consider melatonin to be a drug. Safety concerns and side effects aside, melatonin is not even recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine for those with lasting sleep struggles, and it won’t actually help you sleep.
Melatonin doesn’t help you stay asleep
Remember, melatonin is a hormone that the body already produces to signal it’s time to wind down. Some studies do show that taking occasional low doses can help you adjust your sleep pattern after some type of disruption (like a long travel day). But there’s limited evidence indicating it’s suited to help improve the quality of your sleep over time. It also won’t necessarily make it easier to fall asleep, stay asleep, or reach a deeper sleep. Magnesium on the other hand is an essential mineral you need daily and it works to help calm the mind and body so you can drift off easier and sleep deeper.*
Melatonin does come with side effects
A sleep supplement shouldn’t leave you feeling groggy in the morning—oftentimes, melatonin does. Headaches, queasiness, dizziness, and yes morning sleepiness are all common side effects of regularly supplementing with melatonin. This is even more likely with higher doses of melatonin like 1, 5, or even 10 milligrams. Melatonin might even mess with other hormones (e.g., estrogen) in your body. Taking magnesium (a safe nutrient!) before bedtime not only helps you fall asleep but wake up feeling refreshed.*
